Healthy Daily Skin Care Routines for Any Season

A skin care routine is one of the most important things that you can do for the long-term health and youthful appearance of your face and skin. The first consideration in developing your healthy, daily skin care routine is to determine your skin type which may be dry or oily, or a combination type of skin that changes with the season.  For the most part, your skin type should remain consistent.

Some of the most important things that you should keep in you skin care cabinet include:

Cleanser

A good cleanser must be a part of everyone’s skin care routine, and it is important to use one formulated specifically for your face, not just generic body wash. You should gently wash your face without scrubbing too hard, rinse with warm water, not hot water as too high of a temperature will strip the natural oils from your skin and cause your face to become dehydrated.

Find a facial cleanser that works well with your skin. If you have oily skin, you may want an oil-free skin cleanser or if your skin is dry you might want to choose one without fragrance or alcohol.  If you have oily skin, you may want to consider using a toner as well.

Toner

Toner should be applied to your face after washing to smooth and calm the skin.  Toners typically include ingredients that restore nutrients and replenish your skin that can help to diminish dry patches and redness.

Moisturizer

A good moisturizer is important for everyone and should be applied after washing your face. Moisturizers can be lightweight for oily skin or may be applied a little thicker during the colder, drier winter months. The best time to apply moisturizer is after washing and when your face is still a little damp to lock in moisture.

Sunscreen

Applying a sunscreen with an adequate SPF of at least 30 should be part of your everyday routine, even on gray, cloudy days, fall and winter.  Use sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.  Exposure to UV rays is the number one cause of uneven skin tone, signs of aging and wrinkles.

Exfoliation

You should exfoliate regularly but not every day as over-exfoliation can be damaging to your skin.  Exfoliate once or twice a week at the most, after cleansing, but before applying moisturizer.

Serum

Serums are a wonderful, healthy addition to your skin care routine and contain ingredients like antioxidants and retinol that provide many health benefits to your skin.  Serums can help to improve firmness, moisture, and calm redness.

Fall Skincare Tips: Dermatologist Approved

With the transition of summer to fall, we also need to transition our skincare routine as hot, humid weather is replaced by drier, cooler air. Our skin reacts to temperature changes in the humidity, and hot summer weather helps our skin to retain moisture. With the drier air and the use of indoor heating, our skin can lose moisture quickly, causing dryness, irritation, and sensitivity. Changing up your skincare routine for the fall is not just trendy; it is crucial to maintain happy, healthy skin all year long. Here are some things you can tweak in your skincare regimen to protect against drier air and cooler temps. Use a thicker moisturizer - you should switch to a thicker moisturizer to compensate for the environmental changes. Using a thicker moisturizer at night will help your skin to retain moisture during fall and winter. Use eye cream and lip moisturizer - if eye cream and lip moisturizer are not part of your skincare routine already, they should be during cooler months. Using
