How is a Deep Tissue Massage Different from Swedish Massage

The Woodhouse Spa in The Woodlands specializes in a variety of self-care techniques and guest experiences to promote wellness and relaxation. Guests often look to massage to center themselves and relieve stress from everyday life or pain from injury. Two common massage experiences are the Deep tissue massage and the Swedish massage, also called classic massage.

What are the Differences?

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are similar in that both are frequently used as massage therapy. The key difference between the two is the level of pressure used by your massage therapist.

Other differences between the two massages are:
  • The technique used by your massage therapist
  • The intended use of your massage
  • The amount of pressure used
  • Areas of the body that are focused on

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage does exactly what the name suggests, it is a massage technique that goes deep into each layer of muscle, tendons, and connective tissue and can be used on the entire body or just a focused area. Your massage therapist will utilize special techniques with the hands, fists, fingers, and sometimes elbows to reach each layer of muscle.

You will start the massage on your front or back and then flip over halfway through. Typically, guests are undressed and covered by a sheet, but it is up to you to decide what level of undress you are comfortable with during your massage.

This type of massage is most used by:
  • People with injuries
  • Athletes
  • Runners
Guests who suffer from lower back pain and chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia also benefit from deep tissue massage due to techniques used to release contracted areas of tissue and muscle, which can reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the soft tissues within the body.

Deep tissue massage can be intense at times, so communicate any unwanted discomfort with your therapist.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is one of the more commonly used massage therapy services. Its purpose is to promote relaxation and rejuvenation and is more suited for guests seeking tension relief and relaxation.

Swedish massage is ideal for guests who:
  • Sit for long periods regularly (such as at a computer for work)
  • Suffer from tight muscles from exercising
  • Hold tension in their neck, shoulders, and lower back
Therapists use many of the same techniques as a deep tissue massage, although not as much pressure is used. Swedish massage is targeted for relaxation while stimulating your nerve endings and increasing blood flow.

Like the deep tissue massage, you will start on your stomach or back and flip over partway through the massage. Your massage therapist may use warm essential oils or aromatic lotions during your massage to further your massage experience.
